Interestingly, the South African history gives a far more positive perspective. Although the New Zealanders were under threat, there were British tanks concentrated close to the rear of 15 Panzer, with 1 South African Brigade and the artillery of the Support Group nearby. Perhaps optimistically it notes that these forces ‘were capable of a powerful blow’ especially if coordinated with the New Zealanders. ‘On the whole the situation favoured the Eighth Army.’23
